NJ HPV Vaccination “Start at 9” Call to Action

The Vaccine is Most Effective When Administered Between Ages 9 and 12 Years

On-time HPV vaccination is between 9 and 12 years of age for optimal effectiveness of the vaccine (see table below). Unfortunately, only an estimated 19% of 13-year-old youth in NJ have completed the HPV vaccine series and therefore are not fully protected against the infection and future HPV cancers. That means New Jersey has the lowest estimated on-time completion rates in the country. A substantial body of evidence shows that starting the HPV vaccine series at age 9 increases series completion by age 13 and can help turn around this serious situation in the state.

Ask your organization to endorse “Start at 9” by sharing this Call-to-Action letter with your leadership and filling out this form when you are ready to endorse.

Supporting organizations agree to eventually disseminate a letter (once finalized) urging vaccinating providers to start HPV vaccination at age 9 and to implement other evidence-based practices to increase timely HPV vaccine series completion.
